Amazing Finds: Exploring Classic Games in Japan

Japan has always been at the forefront of video games, constantly pushing boundaries and creating innovative experiences. During my recent trip to Tokyo Game Show, I couldn’t resist exploring the vibrant gaming culture and indulging in some shopping. Join me on this adventure as we delve into the world of classic games and discover some hidden gems!

Akihibara: A Mecca for Classic Games

When it comes to classic games, Akihibara is the place to be. This bustling district has long been known as a paradise for gaming enthusiasts. While some may argue that it has lost some of its charm over the years, I found that it still holds its own. Despite the scarcity of crazy-good deals, Akihibara remains a treasure trove for hard-to-find items not easily available in other parts of the world.

Akihibara

Unearthing Treasures

At Super Potato, one of the renowned game stores in Akihibara, I stumbled upon some remarkable finds. I couldn’t resist picking up the Japanese Saturn, complete with the analog controller and Virtua Gun. It was a joy to discover that everything I purchased was in great condition, impeccably boxed, and accompanied by manuals. Most of the games even had their spine cards intact, a testament to the care taken by their previous owners.

Affordable Delights

One of the highlights of my shopping spree was the incredibly affordable prices. Many games were priced at just 100 Yen each, which amounts to a little over a buck. This included highly acclaimed titles like the Virtua Fighter series, Sega Rally, and other heavy hitters in the Saturn’s library. To my delight, these games were in pristine condition, free from any scuffs or scratches.

The Japanese Gaming Culture

In Japan, the used-game market thrives due to a unique gaming culture. Unlike in other parts of the world, renting games wasn’t a common practice. Instead, players would purchase a new game and sell it back to a store once they were done playing, creating a cycle that kept games in excellent shape. It was fascinating to see the registration card still intact in the box of the Virtua Gun, showcasing the meticulousness of its previous owner.

Nostalgic Gaming Nights

Back at my room, I couldn’t wait to dive into my newly acquired collection with my friends. Capcom’s 2D fighters held up remarkably well, reminding us why they are considered classics. The 3D games, although showing their age, still provided hours of fun. Fighters Megamix, in particular, kept us entertained as we unlocked the game’s bizarre characters. There’s something inexplicably amusing about beating up opponents with a Daytona stock car!

Beyond Saturn: Exploring PlayStation 2

In addition to my Saturn haul, I couldn’t resist picking up a couple of PlayStation 2 games. As a fan of the Dreamcast game Seaman (during my less-perverted days), I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to get the Japan-exclusive sequel. With this new addition to my collection, I was excited to see how the quirky concept would translate to the PS2.

Embracing Language Barriers

Upon diving into the game, I discovered a small challenge. The Dreamcast version of Seaman came with a microphone that connected to the controller, but this wouldn’t work on the PS2. Fortunately, I found a controller with a built-in mic that was compatible with the PS2 port of the game. Although I haven’t tested it yet, I can’t wait to embark on this unique and undoubtedly strange journey once again.
