Back in 2016, we shared our imaginative ideas for 10 Pokémon based on real-life creatures that we believe would be an exciting addition to the Pokémon universe. While Game Freak may have overlooked our suggestions, we’d like to offer them another chance to consider these unique concepts for their upcoming Pokémon Sword and Shield. With no strings attached, we present to you our ideas that are free for the taking.

Emperor Tamarin
This charming creature, the Emperor Tamarin, bears a striking resemblance to German Emperor Wilheim II, but unlike historical emperors, this little guy is known for being a good parent. It’s also undeniably adorable. In addition to its visual appeal, the Emperor Tamarin is a social animal that forms bonds not only with its own species but also with humans. Consequently, it might evolve through friendship with its trainer rather than relying solely on leveling up. As it evolves, its beard could grow more majestic, resembling the grandeur of Jeff Cork’s facial hair.
Wolverine
The wolverine, renowned for its ferocity and scavenging abilities, possesses a deceptively cute appearance. This combination of traits aligns perfectly with the essence of a Pokémon. We suggest a normal/steel-type Pokémon, with the steel typing derived from its sharp claws. Since wolverines have a natural resistance to frost, this Pokémon could possess an ability that provides defense against ice-type moves or the frozen status effect. With the potential for one evolution that enhances its claws and teeth, this wolverine Pokémon would make a great choice for early players, boasting high attack and speed stats while potentially lacking in defense due to its small size.
Kangaroo
While some may argue that Kangaskhan already fills the role of Pokémon’s kangaroo equivalent, we believe there’s room to explore a new, cuter, and furrier take on this iconic animal. With impressive speed and strength, kangaroos are known for their agility both on land and in water. A kangaroo Pokémon that emphasizes these characteristics, featuring high speed and the ability to learn water moves like “surf,” could be an excellent early-game companion. Starting as a baby kangaroo, further evolutions would see this Pokémon grow in size and power, delivering a progression that mirrors the growth of real-life kangaroos.
Alpaca
Alpacas are not only adorable and hilarious in their appearance but also possess a host of communication methods, including spitting. These traits offer fantastic opportunities for character development, moves, and abilities. With over 50 variants of fiber color, it would be delightful to see different regions in Galar host alpaca Pokémon in various colors. Much like Shellos in Diamond and Pearl, they could showcase the diversity of alpacas. Starting as a cria (a baby alpaca), the first evolution would introduce some poofiness and perhaps even poison spit. The final form would display extravagant fur and a pompous attitude to match its stylish hairdo.
Mantis Shrimp
The mantis shrimp is a true badass in the animal kingdom. Despite its small size and unassuming appearance, it possesses a club-like appendage capable of striking with the force of a bullet. This Pokémon would be a glass cannon, featuring incredible attack and speed stats but lacking in defense due to its small stature. Given its ability to see an extraordinary range of colors, it could have a penchant for psychic moves. This late-game Pokémon may even serve as the signature creature of the game’s main antagonist.
Snowy Owl
It’s hard to believe that a snowy owl Pokémon hasn’t graced the Pokémon universe yet, especially with the prominence of Hedwig in the Harry Potter series. This Pokémon would be the first obtainable flying/ice-type creature, distinguishing itself from Articuno. Starting as a shivering baby owl due to the cold environment, it would evolve into a proud and majestic creature acclimated to the freezing temperatures. This evolution would present an opportunity to explore a unique type combination and provide players with an easily accessible Pokémon of this type.
Dolphin

Who wouldn’t want a dolphin Pokémon? Dolphins are known for their adorable appearance, friendly nature, high speed, and intelligence. They could even serve as the equivalent of a “ride Pokémon,” assisting trainers in reaching far-off locations. Although we expressed our desire for a dolphin Pokémon in 2016, it seems Game Freak hasn’t received our message. But we won’t give up! We believe a dolphin Pokémon would be a fantastic addition to the Pokémon universe, even if it means making some room by saying goodbye to older Pokémon. Trust us, it would be worth it!
Sphinx
The Sphinx, a mythical creature with the head of a human and the body of a lion, has captivated imaginations throughout history and popular culture. Combining its intimidating features with a calm demeanor, a legendary Pokémon inspired by the Sphinx would be a fascinating addition. True to its lore, trainers would need to solve riddles to challenge this Pokémon. Possessing formidable claws, wings, and psychic abilities, the Sphinx Pokémon would present a significant challenge in battle.
Gun
No, we’re not referring to the rumored Pokémon Gun game. We’re thinking of an actual gun Pokémon! Similar to the sword-inspired Pokémon, this ghost/steel-type creature would possess the ability to levitate and transform itself into a weapon. Interestingly, the Pokémon Company once considered the idea of a gun Pokémon during the development of Gold and Silver. Starting as a small, levitating handgun, it would evolve into a fearsome and lethal machine gun. To address concerns, this Pokémon’s projectiles could take the form of energy beams akin to those seen in Star Wars, avoiding the complexities associated with ammunition.
Mech
Few things are cooler in the realm of video games than mechs. These powerful, fast, and visually striking machines would fit right in with Pokémon Sword and Shield’s focus on larger environments and dynamax Pokémon. Imagine witnessing a dynamaxed mech in battle! Like Mewtwo and Porygon, this Pokémon would be created by humans and trained to become a formidable force of destruction. However, through an extraordinary turn of events, you, the player, would have the opportunity to capture this mech Pokémon and give it the care it deserves. Due to its immense power and resilience, this Pokémon would likely be restricted from competitive play and only obtainable in the post-game. Perhaps your trainer could even pilot the mech! (But let’s not think about that too much.)
